Tree planting

Today was an exciting day, because we planted a special tree in our garden! The reason that it is special is because Tom’s Granny bought it for us for our wedding. We knew we wanted to get a cherry blossom, and chose Incisa which is also known as ‘The Bride’, which is quite fitting! We bought online and decided to plant now so that the tree didn’t have to make it through the tough winter.  Read More

Aubergine Parmigiana

Until fairly recently, I wasn’t a huge fan of aubergine (or eggplant, if you prefer). But we had a delicious meal on honeymoon that changed my idea about it – one day I’m going to try to recreate it! Helen came to stay with us last weekend and I wanted to try out a new veggie recipe for her, and I chose this one from ‘The Food of the Mediterranean’ by Murdoch Books. It does involve frying the aubergine in batches, so I’m going to give a little warning: if, like us, you don’t have an extractor fan in your kitchen, this will probably stink out your house! It is, however, a really delicious recipe so it was worth it! The original recipe given here serves 8 people – I made it with 3 aubergines and the same amounts for the rest of the ingredients for 3 people, and that seemed to work well. The photo here doesn’t do it justice – sorry for the blurryness, I was hungry when I took it! 🙂 Continue reading…

Fair weather wanderings

Tom is busy building his new website (with the help of the amazing Dan at Baltic Design) and has been saying for ages that he wanted to go out on a sunny day and take some photos that he might use. Well, Saturday turned out to be that day! We knew that storms were coming and so we got ready pretty fast in the morning and dashed out of the door as quickly as we could.

We just pottered round and about where we live, where there is lots of evidence of the old industrial past. Tom used our snazzy camera but I took these photos on my iPhone – there are no filters on any of these. I hope you like them!

Jamie Oliver’s Beef Stroganoff

As many of you will already know, I’m a huge fan of Jamie Oliver’s recipes. I’ve blogged about a few of his recipes in the past, perhaps the most popular being the pork marsala with mushroom rice. That recipe, and this beef stroganoff, are taken from Jamie’s 15-Minute Meals. Many people have said that the recipes take a little longer than 15 minutes, but this stroganoff was super quick! I’d definitely recommend it for a weeknight treat. Continue reading…

Nigella Lawson's breakfast bars | Hello! Hooray!

Nigella Lawson’s breakfast bars

I have to admit that I’m a real cereal fanatic – particularly when it comes to muesli! I usually mix up my own with lots of fruit and nuts, and when I saw these breakfast bars I just had to give them a go. This recipe comes from Nigella Lawson’s ‘Nigella Express‘ and she says that she’s addicted to these – now I know why! They store well in an air tight tin and are perfect for breakfast on the go, or for a mid-morning snack.
